Surfing in Canggu, Bali
The ‘Gu’ that is short for ‘Canggu’ is really trendy these days and everybody wants to come and stay here. But according to some savvy locals just 10 years ago there was nothing here, just jungle and the ocean. Yes, take my word for it.
But let’s go back to surfing at the ‘Gu’. Why I love it? Who doesn’t right?
Berawa, Batu Bolong, Old Man’s, Echo, Sand Bar and Pererenan might not be as famous as the Bukit breaks – namely Uluwuatu – but they never fail to put a smile on my face every single time after a good surf session.
Because Canggu has breaks for all levels:
First of all, there are breaks for all levels in just few minutes away by feet. You have the favourite long boarders’ and beginners’ breaks of Batu Bolong and Old Man’s and then my favourite Berawa.
Berawa is a nice break for intermediate surfers. Not too easy not too difficult – somewhere in the middle. And for the better ones there are the rivermouth breaks, Echo, Sandbar and Pererenan’s left and right, that can compete in difficulty – well almost – the breaks of Bukit or Keramas.
And most importantly the breaks are laid out and you have plenty of space even if they get crowded. Though now with the popularity of Canggu, they seem to get too crowded and everybody is waiting for the end of the Christmas period to have a bit of peace and quiet, even if it means that we are at the rainy season and there’s a bit (or a lot) more wind.
