Ulu the Majestic!

Uluwatu beach Bukit peninsula: one of the most difficult waves of Bali:

One of my best rides is down the Bukit peninsula to Uluwatu. Uluwatu is definitely a must visit beach, whether you are planning to surf it or not.

As you probably know, it is one of the most difficult waves in Bali. Apart from the wave itself that is strong and steep, the beach is also of great interest. To enter the spot you have to go in from a cave. You also need to time your surfing well so when you paddle out tide is mid to low. If you decide to paddle out when tide is high, the current will be quite strong and you will have difficulty getting out.

The famous Uluwatu wave:

On a small swell day, it is definitely worth trying surfing this famous wave. The wave is quite spread out and the righter you go the easier it gets. However, there will be plenty of people that will want to try it out as well so expect a crowded lineup.

On a big swell day, when there will be few brave ones, the spectacle is impressive. Take your seat at one of the many warungs with great view and watch the good surfers get barreled.

Uluwatu temple:

You can combine your daytrip with a visit to Uluwatu temple. It is just 15 minutes away from Uluwatu beach. As with most temples, the best time to visit is during sunset. Unlike other popular temples e.g. Tanah Lot, the ticket to get in here is much cheaper.

The temple itself is nothing great, however, the jaw dropping view from the top is something not to be missed. Every time I visit this temple, I get a feeling I am walking down another version of the Great Wall of China surrounded by endless ocean.

Get ready to meet some not so friendly monkeys (unlike the monkeys of Ubud Monkey Forest) and make sure you get rid of your valuables, if you don’t want to be attacked and get ripped off.

The usual suspects

Balinese dancing:

If you get lucky enough, there is Balinese dancing on an open theater in the temple that you can watch by paying a quite generous entrance fee.

Balinese dancing or not, taking a ride on the wild side of the Bukit peninsula and visiting the famous Uluwatu wave is strongly recommended.
